Jackson County, Mississippi

In 1996, the Mississippi State Department of Health, ATSDR, and EPA confirmed 1,800 homes and businesses had been contaminated over a 10-year period by methyl parathion through unlicensed indoor pesticide use. Many community members were temporarily relocated to motel rooms during extensive assessment and remediation efforts. ATSDR performed training workshops about the stress of displacement and contamination with state social workers. ATSDR also assisted health educators with the development of educational materials for displaced individuals.
