Description:

This toolkit contains descriptions of several community assessment tools, including:

  • Instruments and information for assessing a community’s resilience and vulnerability;
  • Suggestions for interviewing key informants;
  • Information on finding and integrating existing community data;
  • Approaches to conducting group conversations in the community;
  • Descriptions (how/why) for creating infrastructure maps of neighborhoods;
  • Guidance on creating community ecological maps to visualize relationships with community members;
  • Information on conducting stakeholder analysis; and
  • Methods for conducting an analysis of a community’s strengths, weaknesses, and threats.

Target Situation:

Public health professionals who seek tools and methods to assess a community’s demographics, potential for resilience to adverse events (disasters), and strengths and weaknesses, with a focus on community involvement to build plans for disaster prevention, mitigation, and recovery.
